If you suffer from symptoms such as migraines, jaw pain, sinus problems, earaches, ringing in the ears, dizziness or teeth grinding and clenching, you may be suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). The Temporomandibular joints, ligaments and surrounding muscles in front of your ears are responsible for opening and closing your jaw. Any difficulty in the proper function of the joints or muscles can produce painful symptoms and in severe cases deteriorating damage to this complex jaw system and teeth.
The onset of TMD can be brought about from numerous sources including, injuries to the jaw, head or neck, diseases such as arthritis, misalignment of your current bite - the way that your teeth fit together and, in some instances, stress. Dr. Joyner’s comprehensive complete examination of your jaw joints, muscles and position of your teeth identify the source of your discomfort. Dr. Joyner utilizes non-invasive testing and state-of-the-art computerized equipment to study the pattern of your jaw movements and bite relation to the jaw to recommend optimal treatment options. Yes, these are the most common symptoms that can result to TMD. Grinding your teeth can lead to jaw joint problems in addition to other oral health issues. Often, we observe patients that have experienced movement in the position of their teeth, fractures or breakdown of tooth structures, periodontal (gum) disease and bone loss.
The length and extent of TMD treatment will depend on the severity of the symptoms and condition of the overall health of the individual. Treatment relief from symptoms can be seen as early as a few weeks and in some more severe cases surgery is recommended. If you believe you may have TMD, please contact us for an evaluation.
If you are noticing clicking or popping sounds when chewing or when opening and closing your jaw, you may be experiencing symptoms of TMD. The most common cause for clicking and popping sounds is a result of the cartilage between your skull and jaw bone may be misaligned or damaged and often times is not even associated with pain. This is frequently caused by clenching, grinding or an improper bite (how your teeth come together) alignment. Please contact our office for an evaluation and your treatment options.
